Lot Essay

The Cosmograph Daytona, often regarded as the crown jewel of Rolex’s sports watches, is undoubtedly one of the most collectible chronographs of all time. Throughout the evolution of the model, Rolex progressively introduced precious metals and gemstones, culminating during the 1980s with the spectacular references 6269 and 6270. Their exceptional gem-setting brought an entirely new degree of opulence to the celebrated sports chronograph and paved the way for later jewelled Daytona references.

Introduced in the 2000s, the present reference 116568H is a particularly exuberant interpretation of the Daytona, combining a yellow gold case with a bezel set with 24 baguette-cut diamonds. Its exceptionally rare black dial is distinguished by a contrasting red outer track, while the chronograph subsidiary dials are finished in a gold tone, creating a striking contrast with the dark background.

The remarkable uniformity of the baguette-cut diamonds is testament to Rolex’s exacting approach to gem-setting. Each stone is carefully selected for consistency of colour and shape through a rigorous sorting process combining manual expertise with highly specialised equipment more commonly associated with gemmological laboratories. The result is an exceptionally harmonious setting that gives the watch its unmistakable brilliance and presence.
