Lot Essay

The design of the Black Tie collection occupies an important place in Piaget's history. During the 1960s and 1970s, the manufacture distinguished itself through extraordinary creativity, producing highly unconventional watch and jewellery designs that challenged the traditional codes of Swiss watchmaking. Drawing upon its exceptional expertise as a high jeweller, Piaget embraced bold case shapes, ornamental hardstone dials, and innovative materials, creating timepieces that quickly became favourites among artists, collectors, and cultural figures, most notably Andy Warhol.

Following an agreement with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Piaget officially renamed the collection in tribute to the celebrated American artist. The model preserves the bold oversized cushion-shaped case first seen on the manufacture's groundbreaking Beta 21 watches of the early 1970s, characterised by its distinctive stepped bezel and minimalist dial. Andy Warhol himself famously owned and wore a Piaget Beta 21, making the present collection a fitting homage to both the artist and one of the manufacture's most daring design periods. Modern versions also offer extensive possibilities for personalisation through a variety of dial materials and case executions, continuing Piaget's tradition of bespoke elegance.
