Lot Essay

On this special occasion, for a very special cause, Dennison is proud to unveil this one-of-a-kind wristwatch. With mesmerising retro styling, the steel case is set with natural diamonds totalling 1.16 carats, while the caseback is engraved with the ELA logo and ‘Piece Unique’.

The chief glory of this delectable wristwatch is the stunning hardstone dial. Crafted from four different stones, tiger eye, lapis lazuli, onyx and amazonite, it is a testament to the expertise and artistic essence of A L Dennison’s creations, successfully translating 1960s and 1970s design references for the contemporary market.

Dennison
Dennison's story began 175 years ago with Aaron Lufkin Dennison, regarded as the father of American watchmaking. His journey took him from America to Switzerland and then to Britain, where he established the Dennison Watch Case Company. Along the way, Dennison helped define modern watchmaking, registering patents and developing new metal alloys for cases. From co-founding Waltham in the U.S. to building one of the world’s largest case manufacturers in Britain, Dennison’s vision continues to inspire the ethos carried forward by the brand today.

For the best part of the 20th century, Dennison was renowned for designing and producing cases for brands such as Rolex, Omega, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Zenith, the very brands that shaped the industry as we know it today. For over 50 years, Dennison manufactured watch cases and other instruments for the British military. In that time, the company developed an undeniable reputation for excellence. It is no wonder, then, that no fewer than thirteen Smiths watches built with Dennison ‘Aquatite’ cases made the trip to the summit when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first climbed Everest, or that a Dennison-cased watch was on the wrist of Lt. Commander Lithgow when he broke the world air-speed record flying the Supermarine Swift.

The historic Dennison watch brand was officially relaunched in late 2024, more than 50 years after the original British case-making company ceased operations in 1967. Now led by a team of passionate watch lovers, the Dennison back catalogue was explored for inspiration. A treasure trove of documents, images and timepieces was discovered, helping to steer the direction of the brand.

World-famous watch designer Emmanuel Gueit was chosen to bring the collection to life. Emmanuel, who has designed watches for Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Piaget and more, has created something indelible: a collection that picks up right where Dennison left off in the 1960s.
