Lot Essay

The present Nautilus reference 3800 beautifully illustrates Patek Philippe's ability to combine refined jewellery craftsmanship with one of the most iconic luxury sports watch designs ever created. The signature horizontally embossed Nautilus dial is elevated by the addition of eleven diamond-set hour markers, introducing a discreet touch of brilliance while preserving the balanced proportions and understated elegance that have defined the model since its inception.

Reference 3800
Introduced in 1981, reference 3800 was conceived as the mid-size counterpart to Gérald Genta's legendary Nautilus reference 3700, offering a more versatile 37.5 mm case for collectors seeking a more compact interpretation of the original design. Beyond its reduced dimensions, the reference also introduced a central sweep seconds hand, reflected by the SC designation of its calibre, bringing an additional degree of practicality to the Nautilus collection.

During its twenty-five-year production, reference 3800 underwent several important mechanical evolutions. Early examples fitted with calibre 335 SC lacked a quick-set date, a feature introduced in 1987 while retaining the same base movement. In 1992, the reference was upgraded to calibre 330⁄134 before receiving its final evolution, calibre 330⁄194, in 1997, as found in the present timepiece. Remaining in production until 2006, the reference 3800 has become one of the most enduring and versatile Nautilus models, admired for its ideal proportions and its important place in the evolution of Patek Philippe's legendary sports watch.
