The Rudis Sylva Harmonious Oscillator RS12 stands as one of the most original creations of contemporary independent watchmaking. Presented by the Jura-based manufacture Rudis Sylva, the model combines exceptional traditional craftsmanship with a genuinely innovative regulating system: the patented Harmonious Oscillator. Conceived around two mechanically coupled balance wheels linked by a differential, the RS12 explores an entirely different approach to improving chronometric stability while offering one of the most captivating visual displays in modern horology.
Unlike resonance systems based on the physical transmission of vibrations through the movement, such as that developed by François-Paul Journe, the Harmonious Oscillator relies on direct mechanical interaction. The two balance wheels feature finely toothed rims that mesh with one another, allowing one balance, connected to the escapement, to drive the other directly. Their hairsprings breathe in perfect opposition, so that as one expands the other contracts, creating a remarkably stable oscillating system and a mesmerising choreography of mirrored motion. This ingenious mechanism is showcased beneath an openworked dial framed by beautifully hand-engraved bridges. The movement is further distinguished by a hand-guilloché baseplate decorated with a distinctive pyramid motif, while the caseback is adorned with intricate hand engraving and an enamel miniature depicting a historic sundial from Les Bois, the village in the Swiss Jura where Rudis Sylva is based.
The present timepiece is further elevated by its unique dial created in tribute to the Sultanate of Oman. Finished in warm amber lacquer, it features Eastern Arabic numerals together with the Sultanate's emblematic Khanjar and Crown, making it a highly exclusive special commission. Beyond its extraordinary technical ingenuity, the RS12 perfectly embodies the philosophy of Rudis Sylva, whose Latin motto, Ultima Forsan ('Perhaps the Last Hour'), serves as a poetic reminder of the fleeting nature of time and the enduring pursuit of mechanical perfection.
