Gérald Genta is universally regarded as one of the most influential watch designers in history. Responsible for shaping some of the most iconic wristwatches ever created, including landmark designs for Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Cartier, and numerous other prestigious manufactures, he transformed the language of modern watchmaking through his bold creativity and visionary approach. Under his own name, however, Genta enjoyed complete artistic freedom, allowing him to explore some of the most mechanically ambitious creations of the late twentieth century. His celebrated 'Grande Sonnerie' held the distinction of being the world's most complicated serially produced wristwatch for several years during the 1990s, while his independent creations have increasingly come to be recognised as milestones of contemporary high watchmaking.
The present timepiece showcases one of Gérald Genta's most unusual and captivating complications: the retrograde hours display. Rather than completing a conventional circular rotation, the hour hand travels along a semi-circular scale before instantaneously returning to its starting position. This ingenious arrangement leaves the centre of the dial unobstructed, providing a spectacular view of the magnificent one-minute tourbillon. The tourbillon carriage itself doubles as the running seconds indication, distinguished by its characteristic red seconds hand, creating a constantly animated display that perfectly balances mechanical ingenuity with visual spectacle.
Further enhancing the extraordinary character of the watch, the case is lavishly adorned with a double row of diamonds. According to the accompanying Certificate of Origin, a total of 102 diamonds weighing approximately 2.93 carats embellish the case, introducing an exceptional jewellery dimension to Genta's already unconventional design.
