Lot Essay

The Fiat-Abarth OT 1000 was produced in limited numbers between 1964 and 1968 in both coupe and spider forms. Powered by Fiat’s 982 cc four-cylinder engine, the OT – denoting Omologate Turismo – benefited from the enhancement by Abarth, which provided 62 hp delivered through a four-speed transaxle. It was clothed in barchetta-type coachwork penned by Bertone, with a low, svelte line and distinctive headlight treatment.

This sporting OT 1000 Spider is remarkably original, reportedly owing to its single family ownership until recent years. Its original owner, Mr. Busuttil of Tampa, Florida, retained the car until 2002, when it passed to his son, Dr. Ronald Busuttil, a renowned surgeon who pioneered liver transplant surgery and performed the first such operation on February 1, 1984.

In 2008, the Fiat-Abarth passed to Dr. Busuttil’s son, from whom the current owner acquired it in 2023. Its approximately 5,000 miles displayed when catalogued is believed to be correct, supported by the simple chain of ownership. Its condition for a sporting convertible is exceptional; the interior, top, and many of its finishes have never been refurbished, making it an ideal preservation-class entry for shows. Accompanied by tools and a period owner’s manual, this well-maintained original example is an entry level way to experience the legendary pairing of Abarth with Fiat in open form.
