Lot Essay

A particularly close comparison is a creamy-white jade ‘boy and dragon’ handled cup, dated to the Song-Yuan dynasty, sold at Sotheby’s, similarly carved with a dragon and a boy climbing towards the rim. The two cups are closely related in their subject, composition and sculptural treatment. See also a Song-dynasty jade cup, 7.5 cm high, with two figural-form handles in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Jadeware (II), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 110.
