This painting belongs to a larger series, probably comprising fifteen compositions devoted to Tsongkhapa and the Gelug tradition. Significantly, its arrangement does not conform to the better-known compositional system associated with Jamyang Shepai Dorje (1648–1721), developed in the early eighteenth century. Instead, the artist employs a notably intricate and densely orchestrated structure in which numerous divine and protective figures are arranged as discrete yet interconnected vignettes around the commanding image of Tsongkhapa position on the right side.

These subsidiary scenes create a complex devotional universe around the great Gelug master. Across the upper and lateral registers appear Medicine Buddha, Amitayus, Ushnishavijaya, Sitatapatra and Vasudhara, deities associated variously with healing, longevity, protection and prosperity. Their relatively peaceful presence is counterbalanced below by the powerful meditational deities Vajrabhairava and Mahachakra Vajrapani, juxtaposed with the serene figure of White Tara.

The lower register becomes increasingly concentrated with the fierce protectors of the Buddhist teachings. At lower left are Chaturbhuja Mahakala, Yama Dharmaraja and Kshetrapala, while the bottom centre is occupied by Vaishravana and Panjarnata Mahakala. Rather than functioning merely as a hierarchical assembly of attendant figures, these deities are distributed through a succession of carefully differentiated vignettes, each possessing its own iconographic and visual identity.

The remarkable complexity of this arrangement greatly enriches the painting and it compare favourably with another later version of the same composition (HAR 57040) and another from the series in the Rubin Museum of Art (HAR 65845).
