Descrizione dettagliata lotto

The Vacheron Constantin Mercator is a fitting tribute to the cartographer Gerardus Mercator, and the present example, cased in platinum, carries a cloisonné enamel dial depicting the map of ancient Japan. The dial is the work of the Belgian enamellers Lucie and Jean Genbrugge, whose artistry is closely associated with the Mercator series.

The time is displayed unconventionally: two retrograde hands, shaped like the legs of a cartographer's compass, sweep across arcs for the hours and minutes before flying back to their starting positions. The dial itself is a miniature painting in enamel, its outlines formed by fine gold wire and filled with colored enamel before firing, a technique that demands considerable skill and patience. Produced in 2001 as part of a limited series of 30 pieces, this platinum Mercator represents a rare intersection of historical homage and mechanical ingenuity.
