Reference 3514J
Launched in 1964 and kept in production until 1971, the Ref. 3514 was Patek Philippe's second serially made "monodate" wristwatch, arriving after the Ref. 3445. The reference was mainly produced in yellow gold, though examples in pink gold, white gold, and platinum are also known.
The present example stands out for its appealing golden dial, a finish that brings an extra degree of warmth and refinement to the classic Calatrava case. The golden surface plays with the light in a soft, understated way, providing a beautiful backdrop for the applied gold indexes and the date window at 3 o'clock.
Inside beats the highly regarded Calibre 27-460M, an automatic movement considered among the finest of its generation. The "M" stands for mono-date, and the Ref. 3514 was only the second Patek Philippe model to carry this distinguished calibre. The waterproof case was made by Antoine Gerlach, one of Geneva's most respected casemakers, as evidenced by the key hallmark with number 4 found inside the caseback.
