Descriptif du lot

Painted circa 1912, Le Yacht, Maurice Ravel et les soeurs Godebska offers a rare glimpse into the intimate social world of Pierre Bonnard, bringing together three figures from the artistic and musical circles of Belle Époque Paris. The composer Maurice Ravel, seated at right, was a close friend of the Godebska family, whose celebrated Parisian salon provided a meeting place for some of the most inventive minds of the period, including artists, writers and musicians. The sisters, Misia and her sister, belonged to a family deeply embedded in this cultural milieu: Misia, later known as Misia Sert, became one of the great muses and patrons of the Parisian avant-garde, while their father, the sculptor Cyprien Godebski, maintained friendships with many of its leading figures. Ravel's association with the family was particularly close, and it was to the Godebskis that he dedicated Ma mère l'Oye, originally composed as a suite for piano four hands in 1908–1910 for the children of Cipa and Ida Godebski. Depicted here beneath the protective canopy of a yacht, the three companions appear entirely at ease, absorbed in their own pursuits: one sister reads, another works with a piece of blue fabric, while Ravel sits quietly beside them. Rather than a formal group portrait, Bonnard presents an unguarded moment of leisure, capturing the easy familiarity of a circle in which painting, music and conversation were inseparable.
The painting belongs to a particularly fertile period in Bonnard's career, when his increasingly liberated handling of color and light transformed the most ordinary scenes of domestic and social life into richly atmospheric compositions. The yacht itself becomes an intimate, almost domestic enclosure, its dark awning framing the figures against the luminous expanse of water beyond. Bonnard orchestrates a subtle interplay of warm ochres, turquoise blues and pearly whites, allowing the loosely brushed figures to emerge from their surroundings rather than imposing themselves upon them. The composition retains something of the spontaneity of a scene observed in passing, yet its carefully balanced arrangement of figures, textiles and shifting light reveals the artist's extraordinary sensitivity to pictorial structure. A remarkably personal image of the artistic society Bonnard inhabited, Le Yacht captures not simply a leisurely afternoon on the water, but the atmosphere of friendship and creative exchange that animated Parisian cultural life in the years preceding the First World War.
