Lot Essay

Bound in beige cloth and fastened with a clasp, this sketchbook contains roughly thirty-four drawings and studies. Seventeen are landscapes and eight are portraits, along with two nudes, three animal studies, three figural studies, and one piece of another subject. Of particular note are the views sketched aboard Misia Natanson's yacht, which take in scenes, landscapes, and portraits. Pencil is the primary medium.
Certain drawings relate to fully-realized paintings included in the second and fourth volumes of J. and H. Dauberville's Bonnard, catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint. La sieste au jardin (Private collection; D. 1819), appears with some variations from the painting. Further works, with slight variations, are Terrasse de campagne ou Sur la terrasse ou Le thé sur la terrasse, après-midi d'été (Private collection; D. 909); Premier printemps au village ou Le printemps (The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow; D. 718); and Scène villageoise ou Coin de village (The Metropolitan Museum of Art; D. 719). A fully-realized scene depicting Misia's yach, titled Le Yacht, will be offered in Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale, New York, 18 November 2026, lot 387 (D. 748).
