Michel Robert Hallé trained at the Gobelins manufactory where he worked for six years. In 1737 he requested to become master in Paris and was sponsored by Claude de Villers. Nonetheless he remained at the Gobelins until his death, when he was described as orfèvre ordinaire du roi. Despite his position as a royal goldsmith, only six boxes with his mark have been recorded, which may be partly explained by the fact that he died in 1754.

His boxes always have remarkably vivid enamel such as on another box included in this collection (see lot 8) dated 1750 and again on the box in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, recorded in the collection of L. J. Gaignat in 1769 (M.115-1917) which features two peacocks.

The design of this snuff-box is incredibly modern, much like the design of lot 8, with a very geometric arrangement of foliage in this instance enamelled only in royal blue.

For a more detailed note on Michel Robert Hallé see lot 8.
