Lot Essay

This model of salt-cellars was particular popular for a period of approximately twenty years during the height of the Rococo with the first example recorded being by Pierre-Ayme Joubert dated 1748 (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 48.187.380, bequest of Catherine D. Wentworth, 1948) and one of the last dated 1767 by Edme-Pierre Balzac (now in the Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris, N°inv. 26878).

For another comparable pair of double salt-cellars by Louis-Joseph Lenhendrick dated 1756, see The Blaquier-Arrieta Collection Part I, lot 12.
