Lot Essay

This striking lacquer commode remained in the Beauvau-Craon collection at the château de Haroué for well over a hundred years and is illustrated in Douglas Cooper's Great Family Collections. Family tradition has it that this commode came to Haroué through the marriage of Marc-René, 5th Prince de Beauvau-Craon (1816-1883) and Marie d'Aubusson de la Feuillade (1824-62) in 1840. Marie was the daughter of Augustin Pierre d'Aubusson de La Feuillade (1793-1842), an officer of the Legion of Honour, and Blanche Catherine Rouillé de Boissy (1802-1855). It was through the 5th Prince's marriage to Marie that the Princes de Beauvau became the beneficiaries of a large inheritance from Hilaire Rouilly, marquis de Boissy (1765-1840), Marie's maternal grandfather. It is tempting to speculate that this commode could have originated, and been inherited from, the de Boissy collection.

A suite of Louis XVI giltwood seat furniture by Claude Chevigny which were also thought to enter the Beauvau-Craon collection at Haroué via Marie d'Aubusson de la Feuillade were sold Christie's, London, 10 December 2004, lot 360 (£408,450 including premium).
