Lot Essay

This ecuelle is typical of the work of Oertel with the distinctive rose finial and laurel borders. However, although dated 1774-1776 it nonetheless borrows ornaments typical of the Rococo style proving the enduring success of the style. Furthermore the delicate garland chased on the cover is borrowed from Johann Ludwig Imlin's ecuelles produced in the second half of the 1760s.

For a comparable ecuelle by Imlin dated 1768, see Christie's, Paris, 24 April 2024, lot 433.
