Lot Essay

Plaques de tabatière (snuff-boxes plaques) started being produced in Sèvres factory in February 1754 according to Rosalinde Savill, in C. Truman, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Gold Boxes, London, 213, p. 124 and 125. Until 1759 all plaques were purchased exclusively by the Marchand-Mercier Lazare Duvaux before goldsmiths like Jean Ducrollay started acquiring them independently.

For a comparable see the Wallace Collection, a gold-mounted Sèvres porcelain snuff-box by Jean Ducrollay, Paris, 1759-1760 (G.31), and another in the Louvre Museum, Paris, a gold-mounted Sèvres porcelain snuff-box by Pierre-Aymé Joubert, Paris, 1743-1744 (OA 2221).
