The 1980s saw a surge in scholarly research into Severo Calzetta, also known as Severo da Ravenna (1465-1543). As part of this study, satyress inkstands and their variants (a category into which the present model falls), were attributed to the Calzetta workshop (Warren, 2016, loc. cit.). Comparable examples attributed to Ravenna and his workshop are held in international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no. 1975.1.1393), the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. no. 1962.1044) and the Museum of Fine Arts Budapest (inv. no. 5355).
