Icilio Federico Joni, known as the ‘prince’ of Sienese forgers, was a legendary Italian art restorer and painter who produced fakes in the style of Sienese medieval and Renaissance masters. His fakes were so convincing that they deceived leading art historians and curators, with his works ending up in major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; see, for example, his Madonna and Child with Saints Mary Magdalen and Sebastian in the style of Neroccio de’ Landi in the Robert Lehman Collection (inv. 1975.1.57). The present painting was conceived in the style of Benvenuto di Giovanni (1436-before 1517).
