Lot Essay

Delobel's career followed an unusual path marked by the registration of two distinct maker's marks. He began his career as a journeyman and, upon attaining the maîtrise at the Hospice de la Trinité in January 1748, entered his first mark, recorded as 'HDL' beneath a triangle. This is the mark struck on the present box.

In 1756, when he was formally received as a master in Paris, Delobel registered a second mark, likewise bearing the initials 'HDL' but accompanied by a different symbol. The archival description does not identify this device, although it appears to resemble either a spinning top or a thistle. At that time he was living in the Cloître Saint-Jean-en-Grève, where he remained until his death in 1785.
