Descrizione dettagliata lotto

Snuff-boxes with comparable designs are known, all of the same shape and enamelled motifs, attributed to Germany. One was sold at Christie's in Property of a Gentleman, 5 December 2019 and one sold at Sotheby's, New York, part of the Hartman collection, 18 June 2024, lot 221. The former only had a later Dutch control mark whilst the latter had late 18th century German prestige marks. The present example is the only one recorded with spurious marks for Jean Ducrollay, 1754. The existence of these near identical boxes raised the question as to the country of origin and dating of these snuff-boxes.
