As early as 1959, Ettore Sottsass was calling for the invention of new forms, new colours and new functions to reflect the transformations of modern society. A few years later, his Totems gave spectacular expression to this vision.
With their layered geometric forms, vibrant colours and monumental presence, these ceramic sculptures draw as much on the spiritual and symbolic dimensions of ancient architecture as they do on the dynamic visual language of Pop Art.
Straddling the boundaries between sculpture, architecture and design, Sottsass asserted a radically new vision: one of design liberated from purely functional considerations, capable of evoking emotion and bringing a poetic dimension to our surroundings.
