A Chinese scroll painting in ink and colour on paper depicting 'The Signing of the Convention of Peking, October 1860' with dignitaries seated at tables in an interior flanked by lines of armed guards. The bearded figure seated at the left represents Prince Kung, younger brother of the Emperor and Chinese high Commissioner. The white hatted Westener is Lord Elgin, who two weeks before this event had ordered the destruction of the Imperial Summer Palace at Yuanmingyuan. Oppopsite him is his secretary, later Lord Loch. Between them sits the French Commander in Chief, Baron Gros, wearing a tricorn -- 23¾in. x 43½in. (60.3cm x 110.5cm), (damages).
