A japanned metal tea caddy
in the form of a cottage, the cover enclosing a two division interior, probably West Midlands, early 19th century -- 4¼in. (10.8cm) wide

Lot Essay

The present tea caddy bears a strong resemblence to the painted sycamore work boxes and tea caddies, in the form of cottages, thought to emanate from the Tunbridge area, and often described as 'early Tunbridge ware'. It is probable that this caddy is a contemporary copy from one of the West Midlands japanning factories.
