Lot Essay

The crown of thorns partly lacking, a crack running the full length of the truncation to the left front side, right big toe lacking, shrinkage cracks to the left thigh, running down through the knee, an insert of wood lacking from the right calf.

Christ is shown crucified in the so called Jansenist position with both arms raised vertically above His head. The Jansenists, active in the first part of the 17th century, were in direct opposition to the Jesuits and thus condemned all external influences on religion (i.e. the arts, politics, etc.).
