Gary Barlow began working as a professional entertainer in Frodsham, Cheshire in the early 1980s in his early teens. He entered and won a succession of talent competitions, being awarded the prize for Pub Entertainer Of The Year and also winning a Pebble Mill televised contest in the mid-1980s to write A Song For Christmas. With his prize money from this TV appearance, he bought home-studio equipment, and created his own one-man demos of his songs, in the hope of securing a recording contract.
