Closed throughout the war, Rye Pottery was reopened by the brothers Walter and John Cole, who with a team of local apprentices, began to produce a range of studioware that was both fresh and distinctive to a post-war Britain. Selected to exhibit at the Festival of Britain in 1951, and the easing of "Utility" restrictions, served to encourage a creative identity that was to develop for the next 30 years. David Sharp joined Rye Pottery in 1947.
