Lot Essay

AN ATTRACTIVE COPY of the second, expanded edition of Floriani's treatise on all aspects of fortification. ("Piazze" here refers to gun emplacements.) Floriani was designer of the famous fortifications at Malta, and first published this work in his native Macerata in 1630. The plates and illustrations in the book are numbered from 1 to 51, including 14A and 14B and the folding plate (number 51). Cockle and Riccardi, however, require only 51 plates in total, and Cockle does not call for a portrait of the author.
