A sampler by Jean Gay worked in brightly coloured silks, with alphabets and stylised floral spot motifs, with Adam, Eve and the serpent in the centre and the line, "And the woman said the serpent beguiled me and I did eat", within a stylised floral border--14.5in. (36cm.) square, 2nd quarter of 19th century; another by Hannah Bennett 1843 depicting the "Cottage of Content", worked in wools in shades of red, green and brown--23in.
