Further details
Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) the English novelist was born in Upper Bockhampton, near Dorchester, the son of a stonemason. At 22 he went to London to train as an architect, in 1867 he returned home in order to pursue his chosen profession. In 1874 he met and married Emma Gifford, the marriage was not a success and Emma died in 1912. He later married Florence Dugdale and settled in Dorset remaining until his death in 1928. S.C. Cockerell refers to Hardy's friend Sir Sydney Carlysle Cockerell (1867-1962).
