After George Shield
Rough legged Buzzard. Female, by A. T. Aikman
coloured engraving, trimmed to the image, wove paper, tear to left edge and surface abrasions, unexamined out of frame
S. 27½ x 29½in (70 x 75cm)
Literature
The most dramatic of the plates produced by Shield. His intention was clearly to follow the lead of Selby and Audubon and issue a small number of plates periodically to subscribers. Unfortunately only six plates, in one part, titled Ornithological Britannica on the wrappers, were ever produced. Many of the individual plates were eventually given away by Shield to friends and neighbours.
