Lot Essay

The subject portrays a tea-party in the garden of Whistler's house in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. Mr Walter Sickert stands between Mrs Brandon Thomas, and to the right, Mr Starr, Mr Brandon Thomas, Mrs Whistler and Miss Philip. The artist's wife and Miss Philip are seen on the extreme right (Whistler Lithographs, a Catalogue Raisonné, Mervyn Levy)
