"Ben" was owned by Lady Muriel Herbert. An account of how this commission came about is recorded in Lucy Kemp Welch's diary. "Met with Lady Herbert on the 11th of February 1914 at the Empress Club, Dover Street and agreed a commisssion for the painting at fifty guineas." The artist commenced work at Bushey 24th of February and finished the picture on the 30th of March 1914.
