Francis Const (1751-1839) was a prominent lawyer and legal writer. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple on 7th February 1783, and soon formed a large and lucrative practice. He was editor of several editions of J.T. Pratt's Laws relating to the Poor, and was Chairman of the Middlesex Magistrates and Westminster Sessions, holding the latter office until his death on the 16th December 1839. Through the thrifty management of his financial affairs, he amassed alarge fortune and left a number of legacies to many friends, amongst whom were leading figures of society, the literary world and the stage.

Marshall painted another version of this equestrian portrait in 1806, which was engraved and published the same year by Charles Turner, this is now in the Genesee County Museum, Mumford, New York.
