Lot Essay

"[Gloucestershire's] first game in 1923 was against Surrey ... Hammond was told to open with Dipper and their partnership put on 180. Dipper fell for 99 and Hammond went on to get 110. A score of 92 in the second innings brought him close to two centuries in the match ... The game had also given Hammond his first chance of watching Jack Hobbs at close quarters, a player whom he regarded as 'every young batsman's model and ideal'" (Gerald Howat, Walter Hammond, London, 1984, p. 22).
