Lot Essay

A treatise on the science of stone-cutting by the French architect La Rue. Its subject is the art of tracing lines onto the unhewn stone block for the mason to cut into exact sections. The five parts concentrate on sections for entrance ways, vaults, pendentives and relieving arches, rampant arches and window embrasures, and finally staircases.
