Lot Essay
As in the previous lot, there is no record of an action involving the Royal Navy off St. Pierre on 30 November 1811 even though Roux had painted it to suggest an actual incident. It is curious however that the French vessel - in this work an armed cutter - bears the same name and is under command of the same officer as that depicted in the preceeding lot even though the ship itself is quite different. It seems possible therefore that the first Trois Monts Rouge was taken or sunk in July 1810 and her commander given a new vessel of similar name although there is no firm evidence to support this theory at present.
