Lot Essay

Although clearly depicting an actual incident, there is no record of a specific action involving the Royal Navy off Barcelona on 17 July 1810. However, with the Peninsular War at its height and Wellington's armies sweeping across Spain, activity off the Spanish Mediterranean coast was increasing all the time and it was essential that enemy vessels be chased clear and captured if possible.
