The only steam vessel of this period named Cumberland so far located was a paddler of 201 tons built at Holyhead for the Irish trade in 1826. Originally owned by the St. George Company, she operated out of Liverpool on various routes, notably to Newry, but disappears from Lloyd's Registers after 1840. Other works of reference state she survived until broken up in 1851 and it seems likely that this painting depicts that vessel after conversion to screw power although any such conversion is, as yet, unconfirmed.
