Lot Essay

The exhibition 'Das Menschliche Antlitz Europas' [The Face of Europe] was organized as a European counterpart of Edward Steichen's exhibition 'Family of Man'. It opened in November 1959 under the auspices of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg in the Municipal Museum (Stadtmuseum) of Munich. Many famous photographers of the time participated including Cartier-Bresson, Herbert List and Robert Doisneau.
