The letter informs the Board of progress in the construction of the Great Eastern. "The whole of the main body of the ship is in a very forward state and I hope within a fortnight ... to begin laying the decks ... The design of the Screw and paddles have been finally determined upon and the work put in hand ... The Engines of both Makers are in a forward state and I expect soon to begin fixing the boilers in place ... Preparation will shortly be commenced for the launching of the ship."
