ROBERT STEPHENSON (1803-59)
Autograph letter signed ("Rob Stephenson") to I. K. Brunel at 53 Parliament Street, 1¼ pages in pencil, folio with integral address leaf, Haverstock Hill, 10th October 1835.
A letter with small diagram advising Brunel on the specifications and costing for a projected railway.
"Your note was misdirected and I did not get your second until late last night -- The ditch is always outside of the Fences, for the reason you state -- [diagram] 6 feet on the high side & 5 feet on the low side of the cutting -- Your estimate for Locomotive power is I think correct -- it ought to come out about 4/10 of a penny per Ton per Mile -- if your information is to guide a Contractor upon ought to say ½d per Ton per Mile. I conclude the railway is not a long one in which case you will generally find the work of our ordinary Locomotives about 1200 Tons over I Mile a day...."
