HENRY MARC BRUNEL (1842-1903)
Autograph journal in H. M. Brunel's hand of the tour to Egypt with his father in 1858-59, 105 pages, folio, entries, which include occasional pen-and-ink drawings, begin Saturday December 4, 1858, and end March 3, 1859, unbound.
Describing the journey from Geneva to Lyons and Marseille, across the Mediterranean to Alexandria, thence to Cairo, and becoming more detailed during the ferry journey up the Nile when visits are described to the Temple at Dendera, the Cataracts, the Temple and Egyptian fortress at Dakkeh, the Rock Temple of Gorf-Hossayn, etc.; barometric readings are also given. Robert Stephenson's anxiety to help the ailing I. K. Brunel becomes clear (Sunday 19 December "Mr. Hardcastle came in and said that Mr. Stephenson having heard that my father was ill was coming to us at Alexandria with his Doctor"; Christmas Day [Cairo] "In the evening all the Stephenson party viz Mr. S. Mr. & Mrs Perry, Miss Bidder, Mr. Rouse and Capt. Pim came to dinner with us"). It is also apparent that his father has lost none of his enthusiasm for bridge building (Monday 20 December "My father and Dr. Watson and I then got out and went with the resident engineer to look at the new railway bridge that is being built across the Nile").
With 2 other autograph journals of the the Egyptian tour kept by H. M. Brunel, 73 pages and 56 pages, the latter in French. (3)
