LESLIE WARD "SPY" (1851-1922)
1.Autograph letter signed ("Leslie Ward") to ("My dear Mama"), 3 pages, 8vo, Upton Lea, Wednesday [no date], containing a pen-and-ink sketch of a gentleman and a street urchin below the signature, the verso with a pen-and-ink sketch of a policeman, a gentleman and a street urchin with the caption "Please Mr. Policeman, I cant walk hover that side," informing his mother of his activities: "I went for a ride on the ponies yesterday morning to Salt Hill and Chalvey and in the afternoon we rode to see the cattle sale."
2. Seven autograph letters signed ("Dads") to ("Darling Baby") [his daughter Sylvia], altogether 25 pages, 8vo and 4to, [not dated].
Swopping pleasantries and news. One letter of 4 pages informs her that "Princess Alexander of Teck wrote such a nice letter to say why she was unable to call ... It was because she could think of nothing but Prince Alexander's departure for the Front and seeing him off."
3. Seven portrait photographs of Ward, three signed, two as "Leslie Ward 'Spy'," smallest 5½ x 4in., largest 8 x 6½in.
4. A hand-painted vellum autograph album, oblong 8vo, including the cut out signatures of Mark Twain, Baden Powell, Admiral Jellicoe, Lord Roberts, Austen Chamberlain, W. G. Gladstone, and George and Victoria Mary, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and 36 autograph letters, among them a typed letter signed from David Lloyd George to Leslie Ward, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, S.W.1., 24 December 1917, informing him of a knighthood.
"I have the honour to inform you that his majesty has been pleased to approve of my recommendation that you should receive the honour of a knighthood on the forthcoming honours list."
5. Forty Years of Spy, 1918, approximately 56 pages, 4to, LESLIE WARD'S PROOF COPY OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS, WITH HIS PENCIL ANNOTATIONS, disbound (lacking title and text).
6. Esposizione Internazionale della Industrie e del Lavoro. Gran Premio Torino MCMXI, a medal awarded to Ward, with engraved legend "Awarded to Leslie Ward ('Spy') For a Series of Water-colour Portraits of British Celebrities," 2 x 3¼in., in original presentation box.
7. With a large quantity of ephemera relating to Ward, including 4 folio albums of press cuttings, and a collection of photograhs of his daughter Sylvia.
