André Derain's sculpture is classified into three periods: the early works, circa 1905, were mostly geometrical, concurrent with his fauvist paintings; the second period mainly consisted of carvings from stone; the third period began in 1938 and lasted until his death - figurative works, reliefs and masks of this period were made in terracotta and cast in bronze after his death in limited editions, supervised by Madame Derain and Pierre Cailler.
