Lot Essay

Included in the lot are 2 signed autograph letters from Leslie Linder to Jane Smith, Margaret's daughter, both discussing the publication of A History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter, amongst other things, and his presentation of specially-bound copies to the Queen and Queen Mother. One, dated "St. Just, Buckhurst Hill, Essex, August 5th, 1971," states: "...On Monday morning I took the specially bound copies of my book (by taxi) - first to be handed in at Clarence House ... and then on to Buckingham Palace. We were allowed to drive right in ... I handed in the book ... & then drove away - through the gate, with sightsee-ers on either side, and felt like waving to them!! (but didn't)..."
