The present drawing is related to the figures on the right in the picture of the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine with Protector Saints of Bologna painted for the Cappela Pellicani in the church of San Francesco, Bologna, now only known through a copy in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna, D. DeGrazia, Correggio and his Legacy, exhib. cat., National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1984, fig. 129a.
An important number of drawings are related to this important commission, in the British Museum, the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and elsewhere. The drawing which is closest to the present one is that in the Ashmolean (DeGrazia, op. cit., no. 129, illustrated) showing on the right the same grouping of saints before a window frame. The small recess on the floor of the present drawing, not visible in the Oxford sheet, is in the Louvre drawing, C. Legrand, Le dessin à Bologne, La réforme des trois Carracci, exhib. cat., Louvre, Paris, 1994, no. 67, illustrated.
