An 18th-Century lacquered-brass surveying level and alidade,
signed Brander & Höschel in Augsburg, the telescope with lens caps, mounted on the vertical arc with bubble-level, adjusted by rack and pinion gear, the arc engraved in two quadrants with scales for cathetus, basis and gradus, with fine tangent-screw adjustment, the tangent-screw fitted to a swinging shaped arm with lock screw, mounted on the shaped vertical support with two feet, fitted to the alidade rule, inscribed with a scale for Pied de Giesen, and another fine scale with vernier reading against the horizontal circle, arranged to rotate and mounted on a four-screw tripod attachment fitted to the original mahogany tripod, with folding legs and butterfly tightening screws (one damaged), the alidade rule --18.1/8in. (46cm.) long
