Lot Essay

Both works record the reception given to Louis XIII and Anne of Austria by the city of Lyon in December 1622. The highlight of the visit was a firework display on the River Saône, recorded in Pierre Faber's engravings of a lion spouting fire and rockets, and the final set-piece of a barge loaded with exploding fireworks, in the centre of which was the large crowned sun, symbolising the king.
